In 2003 TGPL were contacted by Alfred MCAlpine Project Services, they were part of a Joint Venture working on the upgrading of the A13 trunk road into the East End and regeneration of the associated areas of the London Docklands.
The in a short period of time project had suffered two fatal accidents, a spate of near misses and was under investigation by the Health and Safety Executive. The McAlpine Safety Team persuaded the other venture partners to deploy TGPL in a consultancy capacity. After two weeks of observing the climates through out the site they prepared a report with several recommendations.
Three of these were developed to become standards for future McAlpine contracts.
Active induction
Induction processes that simply tell you the rules then ask you key questions that will meet the legal requirements will not work. With clients we develop inductions that are fully participative, questioning understanding and look at individual climates and behaviours. Not just for front line workforces but also for those in supervisory and management positions. What do you really want to know? – an individuals attitude or their profile based on theories.
The Cards
Through workshops with the site operatives we jointly established a list of behaviours which exposed the workforce, contractors and client to potential loss. From this we developed a firm but fair way of dealing with at risk behaviours with no industrial relations problems. A simple system easily understood by all.
Supervisor Behavioural Safety Course
The Joint Venture agreed to put all its site managers and supervisors through this course.
Post the TGPL involvement the A13 project concluded with over 750,00 man hours worked without incident
